A Smarter Way to Discover Cowboy Boots

Custom WordPress Platform for Cowboy Boot Discovery

Bootbase: Designing a Smarter Way to Discover Cowboy Boots

Bootbase is a custom WordPress platform that transforms Western style research into a practical, approachable cowboy boot discovery experience.

Project Overview

Bootbase began as a passion project combining my interests in cowboy boots, Western style, country music, user experience design, and WordPress development.

I created the site to address a problem I had experienced personally: buying cowboy boots can be surprisingly complicated. Shoppers must navigate unfamiliar terminology, different toe shapes, heel heights, construction methods, sizing conventions, materials, and style expectations—often without an approachable source to help them make sense of it all.

Rather than building another general-interest blog, I developed Bootbase as a structured Western-style discovery platform. It combines practical boot-buying guidance, editorial content, interactive tools, and profiles examining how musicians and other public figures interpret Western style.

The project also gave me an opportunity to deepen my custom WordPress development skills by turning a collection of static HTML components into a purpose-built WordPress theme and content-management system.

Challenge

Most cowboy boot content falls into one of two categories: retail product descriptions designed to sell a particular boot or search-optimized articles that provide broad advice without helping shoppers understand their individual preferences.

New buyers may not know which questions to ask or how factors such as toe shape, heel height, leather, fit, intended use, and personal style affect their decision.

Bootbase needed to make this specialized subject easier to explore while supporting several different types of content. The website had to accommodate practical guides, editorial articles, Western-style profiles, boot-type references, interactive features, and development updates without forcing everything into the standard WordPress post-and-page structure.

The technical challenge was equally important. The Silicon template I selected was a Bootstrap 5-based HTML product rather than an installable WordPress theme. It provided flat HTML layouts, CSS, JavaScript components, vendor libraries, plugins, and design assets—but none of the WordPress architecture needed to manage the site dynamically. I had to transform those front-end resources into a functioning custom WordPress experience.

My Skills

I conceived, designed, developed, and maintained Bootbase as an independent project.

WordPress

Built a custom WordPress theme using PHP, ACF, and REST API integration to manage Bootfluencer profiles, style data, and interactive discovery tools.

Bootstrap 5

Building responsive layouts with Bootstrap 5 components and utilities.

Createx Studios: Silicon

Adapting the Silicon HTML template into a custom WordPress theme.

Advanced Custom Fields

Creating structured fields for profiles, style attributes, and editorial content.

Visual Studio Code

Building and maintaining responsive website pages.

Chat GPT

Using ChatGPT to support research, content development, and repetitive production tasks.

Subject-Matter Expertise

Firsthand knowledge of cowboy-boot construction, fit, styling, and cultural context.

Content Strategy

Creating practical cowboy boot reference content

From HTML template to custom WordPress theme

I began with Silicon, a multipurpose business and technology template created by Createx Studio. Silicon provided a useful visual and front-end foundation, including Bootstrap 5 components, flat HTML templates, CSS, JavaScript, plugins, libraries, and vendor assets. However, it was not an installable WordPress theme and did not include a WordPress content model, administrative interface, or dynamic template hierarchy. I converted the static resources into a customized WordPress theme by breaking the layouts into reusable components and connecting them to WordPress content.

This required me to establish the underlying theme structure, create page and content templates, integrate navigation and dynamic content, manage scripts and styles, and determine which parts of the interface should be reusable across the site.

The result was a custom theme that retained the polish of the original design system while supporting Bootbase’s specialized editorial and interactive content.

Built for reuse

The custom WordPress theme developed for Bootbase also powers this site (stephenjgaines.com), demonstrating its flexibility across both editorial and professional portfolio content.

I designed and developed a custom WordPress theme for Bootbase, combining editorial storytelling with structured style data and interactive discovery tools. Built with PHP, ACF, Bootstrap, DataTables, and Chart.js, the theme supports Bootfluencer profiles, style comparisons, and a guided quiz experience.

Structured content and custom post types

Bootbase required more structure than standard WordPress posts and pages could provide. I created multiple custom post types to separate and manage key content categories, including:

This approach made the administrative experience more organized and allowed each content type to have its own fields, templates, presentation rules, and relationships. It also created a more scalable foundation. New profiles and articles could be added consistently without recreating page layouts or manually formatting the same information each time.

I used Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) to create a structured content system for Bootfluencer profiles, including style attributes, biographical details, and scoring across five style axes. This standardized data powers consistent profile pages, comparisons, visualizations, and quiz recommendations throughout the site.

Bootfluencer profiles

The Bootfluencer section explores how musicians, actors, and other public figures use cowboy boots and Western clothing as part of their personal image. Rather than treating these pages as conventional celebrity profiles, I developed a repeatable editorial framework for examining qualities such as:

Each profile combines editorial writing, visual research, style archetypes, and structured analysis. This allowed me to apply UX principles to a subjective topic by creating a consistent framework that helps readers compare different interpretations of Western style.

Dashboard and data presentation

I also created a dashboard to explore how structured Western-style information could be presented visually.

The dashboard allowed me to work with interface components beyond standard editorial pages, including data tables, charts, filters, and summary information. I incorporated front-end tools such as DataTables and Chart.js to organize and visualize the underlying content.

This part of the project helped me explore how a niche editorial platform could evolve into a more sophisticated research and product-discovery experience.

The Bootfluencer dashboard brings structured profile data into a searchable, sortable comparison tool. Interactive tables and visualizations allow users to explore style scores, identify patterns, and compare how different figures interpret Western fashion.

Interactive Style Finder

I designed the Bootbase Style Finder to make product discovery more personal and approachable. The experience asks users a short series of questions about where they plan to wear their boots, how bold they want their look to be, the cultural references that appeal to them, and how they want the boots to feel as part of their wardrobe.

Answers are evaluated across five style dimensions:

The resulting profile connects the user with multiple Bootfluencers and style directions rather than presenting one rigid answer. This makes the tool feel exploratory while still giving the user a useful starting point.

The Outcome

Bootbase evolved from a personal interest into a working WordPress product and UX case study.

The platform brings together custom WordPress development, responsive interface design, structured content, editorial strategy, interactive product discovery, and data visualization within a consistent experience.

It also demonstrates how I approach self-directed work: identifying an overlooked user problem, creating a content and interaction model around it, and building the technical foundation needed to turn the idea into a functioning website.

Most importantly, Bootbase gave me a way to combine technical development with firsthand subject knowledge. My experience researching, purchasing, wearing, maintaining, and selling cowboy boots helped me design content around the questions and uncertainties customers actually encounter. The result is a platform designed to help people approach cowboy boots with greater confidence, curiosity, and personal style.
